The Fall TV Schedule

Posted by: Brian — September 6, 2006 at 6:00 am

Ah, Autumn. The leaves turn, the air cools, and young men’s thoughts turn to Football and TV schedules. With the welcome shift recently of cable networks airing first-run shows during the traditional networks summer hiatus, the launch of the fall premieres isn’t the event it once was. And while I’ve been fairly happy with the summer offerings (like Rescue Me, The 4400,Treasure Hunters, Monk and Psych) some have left me a little unfulfilled (Kyle XY). — Hmmm… Summer Season Wrap Up sounds like it might be a good blog post. — Anyway, I’m looking forward to the launch of the new Fall Season and several shows in particular, here’s what will be on my TV, computer screen, video iPod and Orb stream this fall. If you ask nicely, Pamma just might be convinced to talk about her Fall watch list and explain her devotion to Ty Penningtion, Mark Harmon, Hugh Laurie, and (of all people) Anderson Cooper.

Sunday: Now that The 4400 has wrapped it’s 3rd season, Sunday is probably make-up night. Catching up on what I missed during the week, or watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition with Pamela. Probably spending some time with the new Sunday Night Football on NBC. I know I should be watching Simpsons and the Family Guy on Fox, but, for me they are filler, and while funny, strangely not compelling.

Monday: Sorry, I’m with Conan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHv8IACWSpM) and I’m not following Howie Mandel to NBC for Monday night, and I’ve just not gotten into Prison Break, so I’ll be checking out How I Met Your Mother over on CBS at 8:30. Following that, I will be headed back to NBC to see how Heroes shapes up. I’ve seen the pre-air for this serial about people who develop super powers and, well, you know I’m a sucker for super-powered spec fic.

Tuesday: Tuesday night the decisions start and I thank God that I’ve got two tuners in the Media center, a large hard-drive and a good Bit Torrent setup, because at 8:00, we get NCIS, House, and Friday Night Lights on CBS, Fox and NBC respectively. I’m waaaay into House, Pamela is still carrying a torch for Mark Harmon on NCIS and I’m a sucker for decent football stories, which I’m hoping Friday Night Lights will deliver. Luckily, ABC and the CW are leaving me alone with Dancing with the Stars and Gilmore Girls. Nine o’clock doesn’t fix things much, as CBS offers The Unit (which I got into this summer via reruns), Fox trots out the HRT drama Standoff, which is awesome, and Veronica Mars on CW. Yes, I watch Veronica Mars. Sue me, it was fun. Honestly, I’m not sure how much longer it will hold me, Season two was a little slow.

Wednesday: Wednesday night is lighter for me with just Jericho on CBS. Again, I’ve already seen the pilot and it’s looking great. It’s a serial about a small Kansas town which finds itself cut off from the outside world following some sort of (apparently) nuclear catastrophe in the US. Other viewers will have a tougher time with Wednesday, but somehow I got away from Lost (9:00 PM ABC) and Bones (8PM Fox). The new shows Kidnapped (10PM NBC), Justice (9PM Fox), 30 Rock (8 NBC), The Nine (10 ABC) and the rest just haven’t suckered me in yet, we’ll see how they go.

Thursday: The only thing I’ll be striving to watch Thursday nights is Smallville (8PM CW). This is another show I found over the summer. Much like Veronica Mars, I’m not sure if it will make the transition to something I wait for every week. At 8PM, I’ll check out the new Fox comedy Till Death but I’m really just not much for sitcoms lately. That might not make the permanent rotation. CSI might (CBS 9PM), but CSI is often filler/background for me and I’ve never hit on the Miami or New York spin offs. Survivor, The OC, Supernatural, and Gray’s Anatomy all also return on Thursday nights, but probably not on my screens.

Friday: Friday night we go Sci-Fi network with Battlestar Galactica (Sci-fi 10). For those who haven’t seen it, Season 2 of Doctor Who is also coming back to Sci-fi at 9PM and personally, I liked Season 2 even more than Season 1, though some might have problems with David Tennant as the Doctor replacing Christopher Eccleston. Numb3rs also shows up at 10 on CBS. I think this will be the year that Las Vegas (9PM NBC) finally loses me. Hey it was fun while it lasted right? But without some serious writing help, the show is a goner.

So there we go… We’ll get back to this mid season and see how things have shaped up. Did the CW manage to get me week to week with Smallville and Veronica Mars? How about the new shows I’m waiting for Jericho, Standoff, Heroes and Friday Night Lights? Only time will tell…
