TOO COOL. Google maps now has FREE click to call 411 like service.

Try this:  Go to google maps (link above) and find your neighborhood.  Search for a nearby business (I tried Blockbuster Video).  Click the "Call" link, and enter your phone number.  Wait for your phone to ring, and Google will connect you to the business.  That's it.  It's free and couldn't BE simpler.

This couldn't come at a better time now that cell 411 calls are like $1.50.  How many ways can I use this?  Click on, fearless reader…

So… let's see how can I use this for good or ill?

1) The way it's supposed to be used — Find a business, click and enter my phone number, get connected for free.  Useful, but only if I'm at a computer, and I might as well look it up on another yellow pages site… Next?

2) I'm out and about, I call a friend who's sitting at a computer and HE looks it up on Google, types my phone number and I get connected… Free 411.

3) Wifey calls me looking for information…. I look up the number for the Information Desk at the NYC Public Library and connect her.  Ok, so Wikipedia is easier…

Then there are the nefarious plans… connecting a friends cell phone to all manner of strange businesses late at night.  But I'd never do such things.  Ever.  Nope.

  1. Too cool. I think it’s more helpful than the yellowpages online because if get a listing that has, say, 3 on Jefferson Davis Highway, the map would help you know which one you were calling. Nice discovery, hon. Keep up the good work!
