Ask Brian: What’s "Ask Brian"?

Posted by: Brian — December 26, 2006 at 6:32 pm

I admit it… I am a well of useless information.

Because of that I'm often answering questions. Sometimes, that's because someone sought my advice or knowledge of something. Often, it's because I have a pathological need to explain things.  More after the jump.

With that in mind, I present to you the latest category of BrianAndPamela.com posts: Ask Brian. You know I almost called it "Figuring the Circumference."

And here's where that mountain of completely useless trivia harms my life. You see, to me, that's funny (or at least interesting) because in the first line of the post I claimed to be a well of useless information, and a well figures into the story of Eratosthenes figuring out the circumference of the earth.

Few other people get things like that or there's a little tickle in the back of their brains that says, "I remember something about that… meh whatever, not that important."  To me, that little tickle is like a small monkey poking me in the head, over and over whispering, "You should know that…you should know that."

So my goal in Ask Brian will be to answer questions asked or unasked.  History, Science, Technology, you name it.  In fact one thing that I hope to do is take some of those tech terms and concepts and make them make sense.  Wonder about things like "Crowdsourcing"?  Or how carbon-dating is supposed to work?  Or maybe you have a question about software?  One of the first "Ask Brian"s is PDF reading and Creation software.

So ask a question, what can it hurt?
