Permalinks rock

Posted by: Brian — December 18, 2006 at 6:38 pm

Well, I don't know if it's random chance or my über-coolness but I FINALLY got decent permalinks running on the site here.  Translation: the full URLs for posts will now be things like: http://www.brianandpamela.com/a-really-interesting-post/ instead of http://www.brianandpamela.com/?p=2982374987243987523984 – which while numerically interesting and fascinating for you math-y types was begining to give me heartburn. Or perhaps that was the shrimp, either way, it's better now.

Oh, and if I had to bet, I'd go with the über-coolness, because hey, I can type a "ü".

TOO COOL. Google maps now has FREE click to call 411 like service.

Googlemapsgif.gifGoogle Maps

Try this:  Go to google maps (link above) and find your neighborhood.  Search for a nearby business (I tried Blockbuster Video).  Click the "Call" link, and enter your phone number.  Wait for your phone to ring, and Google will connect you to the business.  That's it.  It's free and couldn't BE simpler.

This couldn't come at a better time now that cell 411 calls are like $1.50.  How many ways can I use this?  Click on, fearless reader…

Quick weather

Posted by: Brian — November 9, 2006 at 1:56 am

Quick! What's the weather like tomorrow? Bzzzt.  Too slow.

Remember a while back (in the Firefox 2 review ) I mentioned the keyword search feature.  Here's another neat way to use it from Lifehacker: create a keyword search for the zip code search at http://www.weather.gov and call it "weather".  Then simply type "weather 22405" in your Firefox address bar to get the weather for Fredericksburg.  Or, if you must, replace my zip code with yours.  And now you can just type "weather xxxxx", replace xxxxx with the zip code or the City and State for anywhere in the US.

Ready or not, here it comes…

Internet Explorer 7 final released - AUTOMATIC updates begin in November

IE7 w/ callouts

Why should you care? Because IE6 was one of the most targeted (and therefore dangerous) browsers on the market and in spite of the fact that I've been BEGGING all of you to switch to Firefox forever, I know there are some of you still using IE.  So, with that in mind, I repost the intro to IE I sent to the folks at my office. Oh, and I'll get to a review of Firefox 2 soon… promise. Read on…

Email Subscription Available

Posted by: Brian — September 23, 2006 at 7:55 pm

Ok, several people have written to say that they wanted me to let them know when new things get posted to the blog. Well, of course I always mention the RSS feed (http://www.brianandpamela.com/?feed=rss2) but normally, I just get a blank stare. "RS-wha?" Alright, so I've set up a mailing list. Just go to the email page and enter your email address. You'll have to confirm your address (we'll email you a link, you click it to confirm you're you). Whenever a new post is added to the blog (and we think it's something you'll care about) you'll get an email with the subject of the post. Then you can decide if you want to check out the whole article. Of course you can still register and control which categories the system sends you, but this is quicker and doesn't require you to login. So, try it out, and let me know if there are any problems with it. It seems to be working but I haven't had time to do much testing. _b
